In 1505 when Sikander Lodhi was preoccupied with the Tomars of Gwalior, Zahir-ud-din Muhammad, commonly known as Babur attacked the northwestern frontier. Sikander Lodhi was fool enough to ignore the Mongol. After five expeditions in twenty years Babur took Delhi and Agra and deposed the successor of Sikandar, ending the Lodhi dynasty. Babur settled down in Delhi and founded the well known Mughal dynasty
The Mughal dynasty contributed significantly to culture, arts, architecture and philosophy. The prominent rulers of the dynasty were - Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jehangir, Shah Jehan, each of whom contributed his particular aesthetic interests and endeavours to the establishment of what we have subsequently called the Mughal Style, a style which blended the Persian patterns brought by the Mughals with the indigenous genius of fine craftsmanship.
Each emperor used local materials and indigenous forms and craftsmanship to nurture and bring to fruition a unique enduringly beautiful architectural tradition. The Mughal style found triumphant fulfilment in the building of the Taj Mahal, the most splendid expression of the centuries of Mughal rule in India.
