Culture - No Comments » - Posted on April, 17 at 10:10 pm

It falls on the first day of Chaitra month and is the new year’s day of the people of Maharashtra. A Gudhi is tied on the terrace of each house. It is made by tying a cloth to a stick and capping it with a metal pot. Twigs of Neem, sugar Batashas and flower garlands are hung on the Gudhi.

According to legend this is the day when Shri Rama entered Ayodhya after the victory over Ravana. The people of Ayodhya decorated their houses and the streets of Ayodhya and tied a Gudhi to welcome their beloved prince. To commemorate this event people still tie a Gudhi as high as possible.

All the family members wake up early and take a hot water bath with Neem leaves. The smashed leaves of Neem are consumed with the festive meal. The children wear Gathi, a garland of circular sugar tablets. Everybody maintains a happy and pious disposition, as it is believed that whatever one does today will be continued for the whole year.
