National Holiday - Yugadi Padva

Culture - - Posted on November, 5 at 10:00 pm

The first day of the Chaitra month is celebrated as Yugadi Padva, the new year’s day of Andhra Pradesh. Nature is ready to welcome the new year with mango blossoms, fresh and tender leaves and colourful flowers. According to a legend Brahma began creation on this day. Hence new ventures are started on this day to ensure success with the blessings of Brahma.

Neem and Jasmine flowers are important elements of the day. After an early morning bath, a paste of neem leaves mixed with freshly made jaggery is consumed. Bitter neem and sweet jaggery symbolise the contradictions and vicissitudes of life. Neem has medicinal properties too, which are helpful while tiding over the transition of the seasons.

Entrances are decorated with Jasmine garlands and mango leaves. Women decorate their hair with Jasmine flowers. The Pandit reads the Panchang for the new year and offers prayers for the well being and happiness of the family.
