Rama is the seventh incarnation of Vishnu and the central character of the epic Ramayana. He is worshipped in temples as well as in home shrines. He is depicted as holding a bow and arrows and is always accompanied by his brother Lakshmana and wife Sita at his sides and Hanumana sitting obediently at his feet.
His popularity as deity is evident in the practice of greeting each other by saying ‘Ram Ram’. People recite his name to ward of evil and dispel fear of ghosts. In Maharashtra Rama worship has become popular after Ramadasa Swami, the spiritual leader and guru of Maratha ruler Shivaji, advocated it.
Major festivals connected with Rama are Ramanavami, which commemorates the birth of Rama, and Dassehra, commemorating victory of Rama over Ravana.
